The United Nations from its formation in the post Second World War period, through its legacy of the League of Nations, has tried to maintain a sort of tranquility and universal brotherhood, in spite of all its shortcomings among the different countries in the globe. The task is however large keeping in view of the enormous number of countries in the international spectrum. To the latest estimation there are 245 entities which can be conferred the title country. However it is quite difficult to ascertain the true definition of the word 'country'. Since a country is not always synonymous with the residence of a definite nationality. Since as a perfect continuation of the prior onslaughts and exploits on the contrary at present a country has become the embodiment of confluence of different nationalities or multi-ethnic societies representing an array of languages, cultures or even contending religious beliefs.
There have been many definitions of nations propounded by different schools of thought however of late there has been a broader classification of the word. In the sphere of political geography and international politics a country is defined as a geographical entity or a definite territory, which is at best associated with the popular notions of state or nation. In common usage the very term is used in the sense of both 'nation' and 'state'. It should be kept that even how what may be the similarity in definition and all other aspects, in the sense of real politick, the way they are scattered and divided owing to difference of opinions, respective ideologies, including stringent dissensions perceived in the recent years in the sphere of international economic and politics was never witnessed before. Even the period when almost all the countries were divided into two contending camps adhering to two political blocks, then also there used to be some sense of intentional co-ordination among them. This wisdom of amity has however disappeared from the international periphery and the acute dissension following the US expedition on the two countries of Afghanistan and Iraq has been rampant leading to nowhere.
