We Read the News 25. August 2010 Matthew Shipp Larry Blumenfeld attends a concert by the pianist Matthew Shipp at the Blue Note in New York and finds him "verbally ... as combative as any boxer, taunting supposed foes through interviews" Wall Street Journal. Shipp likes to attack Keith Jarrett, writes Blumenfeld, as much as Wynton Marsalis but also less controversial figures such as Herbie Hancock or Wayne Shorter. It all comes from the need "to get up and completely re-create the whole thing every day", says Shipp, criticizing the business surrounding improvised jazz which lacks infrastructure. Shipp sees himself as part of the "Black mystery school pianists", a line running from Thelonious Monk through Andrew Hill, Sun Ra or Randy Weston. Shipp is self-confident about his own place in the music, saying, "Musically, conceptually, no one has caught up with me yet" – and Blumenfeld attests that "At the piano – mouth shut, hands on the keys, mind focused on his personal definition of tradition – Mr. Shipp best makes his case."

Renowned artists featured at main stage Sangam performance Billed as the main event of the 2010 Guelph Jazz Festival, Sangam features three of the most renowned players to grace this year's festival lineup. Legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd is joined by internationally celebrated tabla player Zakir Hussain and prolific young drummer Eric Harland. Charles Lloyd, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, earned his Masters in Music at USC in Los Angeles, California. Heralded as "a master of the tenor saxophone and flute" by the Washington Post, he is largely responsible for the cross-over appeal of free-jazz with fans of the burgeoning psych-rock movement of the 1960s. This led to shared billings with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Cream in venues normally used exclusively for rock concerts.
Yangaroo wins motion on U.S. patent action fees TORONTO, Aug. 25 /CNW/ - YANGAROO Inc. TSX-V: YOO, OTC: YOOIF, the industry's leading secure digital media distribution company, reported that The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin denied a motion by Destiny Media Technologies Inc. OTCBB:DSNY "Destiny" for attorney's fees, noting that Destiny had failed to prove that YANGAROO's case was unjustified or brought in bad faith. The Court held that Destiny had failed to prove that YANGAROO's case was unjustified or brought in bad faith because Destiny's own press releases provided sufficient information to create a belief that its servers could be located in the United States. The Court stated that the speed with which YANGAROO proceeded through this litigation undermined Destiny's assertion that YANGAROO was attempting to delay its resolution. YANGAROO agreed to proceed under the Fast Track procedure, agreed to limited discovery, and agreed to submit briefs on a single issue, and did not ask the Court for a single extension of time during the litigation. Finally, the Court noted that YANGAROO's claim was not precluded by existing law and, therefore, disagreed with Destiny's contention that the suit was baseless. YANGAROO has always believed, and continues to believe, that its claim against Destiny is meritorious.

Berklee's Fall Signature Concert Series Spans Pop, Classic Bebop, Latin The 2010 Berklee College of Music Signature Series announces a fall season that embraces the college’s global community and Boston’s diverse musical tastes. The monthly series of concerts from September to December includes Paula Cole 9/24, Ron Carter 10/14, Jorge Drexler 11/18, and the annual Singers Showcase spotlighting the Beatles’ Abbey Road 12/2. Many of the performances will feature Berklee faculty and students. Concerts take place at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Abbey Lincoln passes Abbey Lincoln, a singer whose dramatic vocal command and tersely poetic songs made her a singular figure in jazz, died today, Saturday August 14 in Manhattan. She was 80 and lived on the Upper West Side. Her death was announced by her brother David Wooldridge. Ms. Lincoln’s career encompassed outspoken civil rights advocacy in the 1960s and fearless introspection in more recent years, and for a time in the 1960s she acted in films with Sidney Poitier.

Bill McBirnie's New Album, MERCY, Wins The Jazz TIMA The album, MERCY, The Bill McBirnie Duo/Quartet featuring Robi Botos, won the award for Best Jazz at the 2009-2010 TIMA Toronto Independent Music Awards. Of course, Bill thanked the musicians once again, all of whom made this outcome possible; namely, Robi Botos piano, Pat Collins bass and John Sumner drums. In addition, Bill extended special thanks to his co-producer, Pacy Shulman of Hilo Studio, who not only engineered but also mixed as well mastered MERCY. Pacy's workmanship was genuinely acoustic with absolute fidelity to the nature and quality of the musical undertaking which consisted quite simply of two blowing sessions.

Notorious BIG The rap singer Notorious BIG had been influenced by jazz musicians such as Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald, claims saxophonist Donald Harrison who had been a neighbor of the rap star killed in 1997, met him on the stoop and, learning about his interest in music, gave him homework such as scatting along to an Adderley saxophone solo. "We worked on various tonguing and speed and agility", Harrison explains in an NPR feature NPR music.
