Pink Floyd Sues EMI Over Digital Royalties, Unbundled Albums
Authored by Mark Hefflinger London - Veteran rock band Pink Floyd has filed suit against major record label EMI over the way in which royalties have been paid to the band for digital music sold online. The band's ten-year-old contract was signed before Apple's iTunes Store existed, and stipulates that the band's albums may not be sold as individual tracks. "It#39;s a matter of fact that the defendant has been permitting individual tracks to be downloaded online and that therefore they have been allowing albums not to be sold in their original configuration," Robert Howe, Pink Floyd's attorney, said in Britain's High Court, according to BusinessWeek's coverage.

We read the morning paper for you!
4. März 2010 Nils Wülker Florian Zinnecker starts by claiming that jazz is losing its audience these days and once again, we ask ourselves where he gets this information from, then introduces the Hamburg-based trumpeter Nils Wülker, who is getting a lot of public attention these days die tageszeitung. "Are guys like him the future", Zinnecker asks and then reports about how Wülker was the first German jazz musicians to sign a contract with Sony Records in 2001, only to turn his back towards the label four years later and found his own label. Wülker is willing to think outside of stylistic boxes, says Zinnecker and insinuates that "his colleagues" are not; he is not afraid of either classical or pop. "If a record company would ask their pop department to assemble an ideal jazz musician, the result would be Wülker. Good-looking, not too smooth and not too edgy, suitable for younger audiences." Besides music, Wülker also knows about the importance of marketing, yet he knows that once you've got the people to attend a concert, it is the music that counts.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Preservation Preservation Hall 01 March 2010 — by Alex Rawls By now, it should be obvious that this is not your father’s Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Under Ben Jaffe’s leadership, it has become something more post-modern and conceptual. The name’s the thing, even if the cast of players changes from session to session and track to track. It celebrates New Orleans and traditional jazz, but it does so broadly, reaching beyond the obvious canon for lesser known songs or modern songs that owe the city’s musical past a debt. The implication is that the band and the songs have something to say today, even if it takes a King Britt remix or two to make that point obvious.
